Dr. Lawrence John Plett (May 15, 1934 – January 19, 2006) was an American-born holiday organizer and intellectual, best known as the primary architect behind Bomellida, a secular, non-cultural mid-winter holiday, as it was spread all across North America and possibly even reached other continents, proposed in October 23, 1961.
Born in Moore, Oklahoma, Plett was 27 years old when he officially proposed the concept of Bomellida, meaning Bonum Melliculus Datio, or Good Sugary Giving, with the flag Misty Teal (top, Hex: #c1ffff), Orange (middle, Hex: #ff7e26), and Brown (bottom, Hex: #b97b57), Misty Teal represents freshness, renewal, and winter and cold, Orange represents happiness, and Brown represents the chocolates and sweets shared during the holiday, on October 23, 1961. Designed as a non-cultural, secular event to bring warmth and community bonding to North America during the coldest stretch of winter, the holiday was formally accepted on January 5, 1962. Plett envisioned the day, celebrated on January 10th, as a time for sharing candies, chocolates, and sweets.
While Dr. Plett successfully saw the first active celebration of Bomellida in 1963, the 1964 observance was entirely derailed by a catastrophic, unnamed North American blizzard on January 10th, that possibly had real supercell tornadoes in snow. Due to the trauma of the storm and a complete lack of corporate or commercial backing (such as radio advertisements or musical promotional pushes), the holiday naturally faded from public awareness after 1966.
Dr. Lawrence Plett passed away on January 19, 2006, at the age of 71. Because the details surrounding his death remain obscure, many unverified theories exist within historical research groups, including:
For decades, Dr. Plett's contributions remained forgotten until digitized historical records and original 1963 newspaper articles were recovered. His life, work, and the original proposal papers continue to be preserved and documented.
